Great for Winter Trekking in Nepal
i wore the hillsound trail crampon ultra over multiple days along the annapurna circuit in nepal in december, and found them fantastic. i wore them over a pair of fairly stiff boots (limmer standard). i have never worn spikes or crampons before, but despite that they offer great traction and stability. in particular, i wore the spikes the entire way from thorong phedi to muktinath, covering nearly 19km and 900m elevation gain/1,600m loss, with snow, ice, dirt trail and solid rock/tiles. i just walked normally and barely noticed that the spikes were on. they also provided great traction on the steep trail to ice lake (manang) and solid icy surface along sections of the yak kharka-thorong phedi trail. without these spikes it would have been impossible to traverse the sections. my experienced nepali guide and porter were very impressed with the spikes, and my porter had tried them on one icy section. they would have seen many types of traction devices in use over all the seasons, so i suppose that offers additional validation to the quality and performance of the spikes. the only unknown is the long-term durability as i have only used them for two weeks in aggregate; however, the spikes are well made and there has been no deterioration and wear so far.

i have owned micros from rei before and they provided decent traction but didn't last a full season of intense scrambling and some light mountaineering. these are still only a couple months old. can't attest to long term durability yet. with the metal toe bail i expect then to do well. the traction is incredible and i like the velcro closure over the forefoot. keeps them seated even when covered in snow or mud. they have kept me grou ded on the steep stuff in mud, neve, snow and mats of decomposing desert brush thus far. would buy again.
