A Taste of the Old World

Quite possibly the first dehydrated food for backpackers. In 9th century Hungary, stew meat was cooked, then dried in the sun. Shepherds carried it in bags made from sheep’s stomachs and added water when they wanted to eat.

Nomad Nutrition's Hungarian Goulash is the vegan version of an ancient staple and is filled with potatoes, lentils, Hungarian peppers and a blend of spices to make this meal stand out from the rest.

Blissfully free of old-world reliance on animal products.

Plant based option for goulash

i've been to hungary and had really good goulash... this is a plant based interpretation of those dishes and was in my opinion, really good! i will order this again for future trips! i would like to add just a dash more of smoked paprika to round out the flavor but not a deal breaker. good stuff.

Not good - wouldn't rehydrate, tasted rancid

just wasn't good, i bought it to try before i go on a trip, and i am glad i did. i would have been very disappointed if this was what i had to eat.

Crunchy bits

two stars may be generous; it's mostly to acknowledge the flavor was good. similar to another reviewer, i had one of these meals that just wouldn't fully hydrate. i find most packaged meals from most manufacturers don't re-hydrate completely—at least for my tastes—by just soaking in hot water for the recommended time. so i did what i usually do; added the meal to water in a pot, brought it to boil, and turned the heat down to a simmer. then simmered for half the total recommended soak time, then turned off the heat and let it sit for the remainder of the time. took a sample. nope, still crunchy. added a bit of water, simmered for another 10 minutes, let sit for another 10. nope. altogether, this was simmering and sitting for most of an hour, and still, beans were not soft. i contacted the company, and they acknowledged there was an issue (and offered some replacement meals) but they said it was a one-off problem with this batch of this particular meal. but i had a similar issue with another nomand meal in roughly the same time period. plus, my experience happened more that a year ago (2021), and the other review noting this issue dates from december, 2023, so the problem seems to extend over some period of time. to be fair, i've had other nomad meals that have been just fine, but, after this, i feel like i can't count on them out on the trail where i really need to rely on the foods i carry.

I wanted to like this

i really wanted to like this, but the experience was too bad. even after adding boiling water and keeping it in an insulated food cozy for more than twice the time it said to cook, the beans were still rock hard and never rehydrated. i had to pick the beans out of every spoonful. it was late, i was cold, and the last thing i wanted to do was pick rock hard beans from my soup.

Great Tasting

The taste was great, but it took much longer to soak than the package indicated. Some ingredients never got soft and after 18 minutes it was cooling off and I was hungry so I ate it. Some chunks were like hard bullets.
