From the Front Range to the Backcountry: The Borvo Broth Story

Ali Becker

Founded in the heart of Colorado's Front Range, Borvo Broth was born out of a deep love for the outdoors and a desire to fuel adventure with something better than the typical trail snacks and usual hot beverage options.

The Boulder-based Borvo Broth team wanted to create a product that was lightweight and convenient but also packed with real nourishment — something that could energize adventurers, restore tired muscles, and warm spirits in the backcountry.

Bringing Borvo Broth to Life

“We are all big-time outdoor enthusiasts, particularly cold weather outdoor sports like backcountry skiing, cold weather backpacking, and ice climbing,” explains Ross Fredella, Borvo Broth’s Creative Director and one of the company's four passionate co-founders.

“We got tired of the only warm hydration options being coffee or something sweet and sugary. Why not be able to throw a savory warm beverage in a thermos to enjoy in the middle of a long day out in the mountains?”

When the team couldn’t find any healthy options that tasted good, they set out to make one themselves.

Simple Idea, Big Vision

The idea was simple: instant bone broth that’s rich in protein, collagen, and amino acids — all the things your body craves during and after a long day in the mountains.

But the execution was anything but simple.

“We wanted to make sure the broth gave our customers the energy and nutrients they need when they’re out in the backcountry,” says Ross. “We also chose to dehydrate the broth, so it weighs next to nothing and is easy to toss in a backpack and bring with you.”

The Borvo Broth team poured their hearts into sourcing all-natural ingredients, perfecting their recipes, and ensuring that every packet of broth delivered not just on flavor but also on functionality.

But they didn’t stop there...

No Place for Plastics

Staying true to their love for the outdoors, Borvo Broth committed to a zero-trash mission, using 100% compostable packaging to ensure their product didn’t leave a mark on the wild places they love.

“We’ve all seen the protein bar wrappers out there in an otherwise totally pristine and undisturbed wilderness environment. Or piling up in the trash cans at the trailhead,” laments Ross.

“We wanted to do what we could to make sure anything we produced didn’t end up in a landfill with all the other single-use plastic wrappers.”

So the team undertook the massive and challenging task of creating packaging made of compostable materials — not just to do a solid for the environment and us stewards, but to be a good example for other outdoor food brands as well. A reminder to still practice Leave No Trace principles and pack-out any wrappers to compost them at a commercial facility.

Yet creating compostable packaging wasn’t the only challenge these broth barons have overcome gracefully in their two short years as an enterprise.

As Ross explains, “the biggest challenge was bringing all the right people together to get it off the ground. We were lucky that our founding team was made up of entrepreneurs, designers, and operational experts.”

“But we all came from different backgrounds, so it was a learning process for all of us to get the company off the ground. Learning something with every new challenge has been very rewarding!”

Perhaps the biggest reward for Borvo Broth — which takes its name from the Celtic God associated with healing and hot springs — has been the love and support they have received from the outdoor adventure community they were hoping to help out in the first place.

“It’s especially cool when we get a review or an email from someone saying they took it out with them on an expedition and it hit the spot,” says Ross. “That’s really validating and gets us excited to keep building the brand.”

Everyone from average adventurers to professionals in the mountain guiding and outdoor sports communities are singing the praises of this delicious, nutrient-dense, easy to pack and prepare backcountry broth beverage that helps them “give it their all” — no matter whatever it is they love to do.

And while the beef & vegetable and classic chicken bone broth choices delight the palate — the four founding fathers Josh, Kevin, Ross, and Matt have some big plans for the near future, too.

“We are busy working on a few new flavors that we are really excited about,” says Ross, “and we're focused on finding more like-minded retailers and outdoors enthusiasts to try Borvo.”

Let’s face it — winter, spring, summer, or fall — nothing beats sipping some savory goodness while sitting around the campfire, or perched on top of a mountain at sunset, making Borvo Broth a brilliant addition to your gear checklist for your next outdoor expedition.
