Everyone signs up for races for their own reasons. For me, at least one compelling reason is the excuse to train harder than I otherwise might.
I’m better about blocking time out on the calendar, scheming up challenging adventures and pushing myself that extra little bit.
With the Never Sumer 24-hour adventure race a mere few weeks away, I’ve had a couple of wonderful days out on the mountains with my team mates, Abby and Jason.
On Saturday, we started from downtown Driggs – the tiny Idaho town with a population of 2,000 that we call home – and made our way from there to the top of the Tetons.
We biked to the end of North Leigh Canyon – with a little bit of hike-a-bike bushwacking thrown in, trying to find a trail between South Leigh and North Leigh that exists only on the map. From there, we climbed on foot to the top of Littles Peak (elevation 10,712 feet). In all, we covered about 18 miles on foot in six hours and then spent a few additional hours pedaling.
Days like these make me feel truly in awe of our backyard! The wildflowers were off the hook and the views ... ya, they were pretty good too.
Yesterday, we ducked out from work a few hours early to climb iconic Table Mountain. Sweltering heat made the 3-hour round-trip journey a grunt. But it was well worth the views, camaraderie and happy exhaustion I feel sitting at my desk today.
Here’s to summer adventures and keeping the important things in life front and center.
Ummm ... we're only sort of lost
