When my and I (and our dog, Bella) hiked from Springer Mnt to Pen Mar Pa. we noticed that the only African Americans we encountered were a woman hiking with a church group and a male Iraq war veteran. He was doing his second AT thru hike.
Unique to the trail is its tendency to turn strangers from all walks of life into a very real kind of kinship—we are like family.
This is a great cause and if should not win, I hope a black person does.
