Almost perfect - side pockets are an issue
I've used Osprey backpacks for over a decade (including the Aura and Tempest), and I didn’t expect to like the Gorilla as much as I do—but I was genuinely surprised. The Gorilla is significantly more comfortable to carry, especially over long distances. The suspension feels natural, the pack hugs the back well, and I find the weight distribution excellent, even when fully loaded. One of the features I appreciate most is the hip belt design. The hip belt pockets are generously sized, well-placed, and sit further forward than on many other packs, making them far more usable while hiking. That small detail reflects smart, ergonomic thinking, and really enhances the on-trail experience. That said, I do believe there is a design flaw in the side pocket configuration. I have normal shoulder flexibility, but I simply cannot reach a water bottle from the side pocket while wearing the pack. This undermines the utility of the pockets for hydration—something many hikers rely on. One of the reasons I chose this pack was to move away from hydration bladders and simplify my water system, but this design makes that very difficult in practice. For a pack designed with thru-hiking and long days in mind, ease of hydration access should be a core feature, not an afterthought. Despite that, I truly enjoy using the Gorilla. It's light, thoughtfully constructed, and extremely comfortable. If Gossamer Gear ever revisits the side pocket design—perhaps with angled access or a more flexible material—this would be, in my opinion, a near-perfect pack.
Great pack
Super light, very comfy, doesn't make that irritating squeaking noise of some packs, and seems like a black hole when it comes to packing gear. What's not to love!??!
Great pack
New to backpacking, 3 day trip and my shoulders felt fresh as a daisy the whole time.
Excellent design
I’ve been on the search for the past year to find the right backpack for the right price and I finally found it. It’s the perfect size and I was able to cut a lot off my base weight by switching. I’m especially a big fan of the stretchy mesh pocket on the back and the nice big hip belt pockets. My favorite part though is that I can easily retrieve my water bottle without taking the pack off or having to strain my arm. It’s a very good design. So far I am very happy with this purchase!
This pack is so well designed. There are so many loops for customization, and so much storage. I have packed it with my normal backpacking gear, and I still have room that I usually don't with my Gregory 58.
