The TiCa Ice Tool is the lightest way to cross high country snow fields. It was inspired by traditional hill walking axes, but built with modern ultralight materials. It provides more stability on low angle snowy terrain than trekking poles at a fraction of the weight of a certified ice axe.

The tool was developed in the Backpackinglight forums and is built in Toronto, Canada. Note: The TiCa Ice Tool is not a replacement for a UIAA-certified ice axe on technical terrain and should not be used where life or safety is at risk.

A solid option for thru-hikers where there’s not much technical terrain, but where a basic self arrest might still be needed.

“It made my previous ultralight axe feel like a tank and it is a piece of gear art. Since then, it has been my faithful companion on every non-technical climb or scramble…. I LOVE this tool.”

Lightest you can get, perfect for just in case

I own two other ice axes. A 75cm Petzl Glacier and a 45cm Petzl Ride. For backpacking usage, both kind of ****. The 75cm one is heavy, the 45cm one is only good for self arresting. Most of the time there's very little snow and I'm carrying an axe just in case. For that the Sulak ice tool is perfect. It's very very light and while not rated as an ice axe, it does just fine for self arresting, plunging, and light step chopping. If I knew I was going to be on snow more than 50% of the time I'd just take the heavy Petzl, but for long trips where you might hit one icy stretch this ice tool is perfect. I do wish Garage Grown Gear carried the 70cm version, since I'm really tall, but 65cm works too.

Coolest tool, light as a feather

i just carried this with me on the trt for safety as there was still many snow traverses to be had, and i was traveling solo. the weight is literally nothing, so it's no problem to just add in your bag and have an additional tool in the backcountry. very well made. great purchase.

purchased as part of a ul mountain safety system (harness, helmet, cord). love the weight and design. i design and make a lot of items in steel, so i really appreciate suluk's high quality work. as with the other gear, if the item is light enough, why not take it i've turned back from routes where the exposure was just too high for no pro, and this 2 lb system has allowed me to expand what risks i'm comfortable with.
