The Gatewood Cape is the super ultralight backpacker’s dream – shave ounces by combining your rain gear and tarp into one.

The Gatewood Cape is the ONLY poncho-style Tarp to provide complete 360° protection, either when worn as a cape or used as a shelter. Since its introduction in 2006, it has been carried over hundreds of thousands of trail miles. It’s provided shelter in everything from high mountain snow-choked ridges to lush forest trails.

With 35 square feet of coverage under the shelter's canopy, you've got plenty of room for you and your gear.

For the adventuresome day hiker, the Gatewood Cape makes the perfect addition to your 10 essentials survival kit. It packs down incredibly small and provides peace of mind knowing you've got excellent protection close at hand.

*Note: to completely repel water, shelters need to have sealer applied to the seams before use. Seam Sealer available HERE.

Features:

  • Dual zipper pulls on the front of the Gatewood Cape allow you to regulate ventilation while still providing full protection
  • Micro buckles connect the harness to cape for easy installation and removal
  • Full 360-degree protection when set up as a shelter or worn as rain gear
  • Full zippered entrance makes entering and exiting the shelter a snap
  • Adjustable vestibule height allows you increase ventilation while maintaining adequate rain protection
  • Side snaps for shortening the long sides when worn as a cape
  • Floating canopy allows the canopy to be set to different heights depending upon conditions
  • Integrated stash pocket with zipper closure to keep stuff contained, doubles as a stuff sack
  • Center pole support significantly improves the ability of the shelter to handle wind and snow loads.
  • Easy setup

For added bug protection, the Gatewood Cape mates with the Serenity NetTent. Together they keep both the rain and bugs at bay. Providing you with secure and comfortable space.

      Great multi purpose gear

I have yet to build the tent the correct way, but I love having gear that does more than one thing. Ground cloth packing or under tent. Unexpected rain tent, gear tent, Poncho that covered my large paraglider pack. Very water repellent. When I ware this one out, I'll definitely be looking to replace with the same... Oh and I love that it has its own pocket and the pack volume and weight is amazing!

      A favorite piece of gear

this is a truly unique and functional piece of gear. it's extremely light and quick to set up (takes me less than a minute in most cases), and provides much better 360 degree protection than a tarp. it's far more versatile than a tent - i like being able to sit in a chair inside on bare ground, and when needed i just add an inexpensive generic interior bug tent to turn this into a genuine double wall tent. my preference is just to use a long-wide sierra designs bivy with a mesh netting window - in that setup, it's bomber in bad weather, and i find that enormous bivy more comfortable inside the gatewood cape, than a single person tent. that setup gives me many more options in various sorts of weather conditions and temperatures (bivy alone, cape alone, both together, cape with bug net, etc.). this combination is lighter, less expensive, more versatile, and more comfortable than any of the other 20+ tents i own. i've used the cape in 30+ mph winds. one concern you might have with using rain gear as a shelter, is how to keep from getting wet while setting up the shelter. in rain, i stake down the back 2 corners and insert the pole without ever getting out from underneath. it just takes one stake in front to ***** it (just a couple seconds if it's raining), then get back underneath to stake out the last two points from inside. i'm able to stay dryer in rain doing that, than having to set up a more complex shelter.

      No regrets

the wrap around design served me much better than a traditional tarp set up. it's a good balance of weight, privacy, weather resistance, versatility, and cost. easy and quick to pitch or toss over a pack. it's survived windy mountains (though not ideal) and some exceptionally scottish weather. it's short-coming is that it drapes long and can be a bit cumbersome moving on the trail. i've opted to still bring a rain jacket when i anticipate that issue.

      Incredibly Versatile

Thin and lightweight but completely waterproof and big enough to use with a pack on or quick pitch to a shelter to sit out a downpour
