My Top Sunrise and Sunset Photos from the Appalachian Trail

Sunrise Sunsets AT Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiking

It is late September as I sit on my couch writing up this blog post. It has been almost two months since my Appalachian Trail thru-hike, and I would be lying if I were to say that I wasn’t missing aspects of trail life right about now. Almost everyday, I find myself scrolling through the copious amounts of photos that I have taken throughout my four month long trek along the East Coast.

I took a lot of photos during my hike, as I am sure almost every thru-hiker does during their journeys. For me, photography is a way to capture a moment for future reminiscing; I can look back at an old photo and place myself in the exact moment that the photo was taken. It reminds me what I was doing when the photo was taken, where I was, who I was with, and how I was feeling at the moment. I think most people will agree that one singular photo can bring back countless memories.

I am no professional photographer; I feel that writing is more of my strong suit. This doesn’t mean that I still didn’t try taking the best photos possible with my iPhone. One of my favorite things to photograph on trail were sunrises/ sunsets.

On the trail, some of my most memorable moments were early in the morning, sipping on a cup of coffee, watching the array of colors explode across the sky, as the sun began to creep up over the horizon. These sunrise photos almost always make my social media feed, and typically get sent to all my friends/ family. Who doesn’t love a good sunrise/ sunset photo?

I did my best to capture these moments as often as I could while on trail not only for myself to reminisce on, but so I can share with others.

I personally prefer a sunrise over a sunset, but many people might debate this statement. Which would you rather see? Let me know in the comments!

That first one in the post is my Favorite. It reminds me of the morning we checked in at the kiosk just after able bridge and before starting into Baxter State Park.

And the mid 1960s the high school that I attended we had a teacher that formed a hiking club. I was one of the members along with several friends and new friends that I made we did a fair amount of backpacking the Shenandoah valley and up into Pennsylvania cross South mountain, love the pictures of your sunsets and sunrises I remember a few of them myself but back then we didn’t have throwaway cameras and carried enough weight cuz we didn’t have the freeze dried foods all the nice things that they have today. But we had fun we loved it and I’m going to send it to a very good old friend of mine that was there so these pictures will bring him back some memories also thank you very much. Unfortunately today I’m not able to do any of that hiking but I sure would love to. Again thank you for the pictures would really be nice if you could add where they were taken but other than that fantastic.
