The BV500-Journey is the gold standard for multi-day adventures, long distance hikers, and aspirational thru hikers. The largest and most spacious of BearVault canisters, BV500s have logged more miles than any other canister. Whether packing a few hearty meals for a group, or counting every ounce of calories to reach your goal, the BV500 is up for the journey, fitting 7 plus days of food.
Features:
- Specifically designed to be wide, round and slippery to reduce leverage points for entry from bear jaws, claws and paws
- Weight is low and volume is high, thanks to the durable, polycarbonate construction
- Transparent canister is easy to see into and doesn’t require you to empty the contents of the container to find specific items
- Wide opening allows you to reach all the way in to find your tasty treats
- Screw-on lid is intuitive and secure, and doesn’t require extra tools to operate; no need to overtighten
- Strap guides aid in strapping and packing canister to your preference; an ideal place for your can is inside your pack just above your sleeping bag
- Rounded corners allow for smooth packing and removal
- Container doubles as a camp stool, a luxury most backpackers leave behind; close lid fully when using as a stool to preserve the screw-top threads

Bear Vault
Used this in the BWCAW. So great to not have to try to find trees that work, get a rope over the branch (instead of tangled in snags) and haul up food to hang it—or fail, give up and worry about bears. Not to mention the other critters that like to get into your food. Wish we’d gotten this years ago!
Great Bear Protection for your Food
this is a great bear protection item. we’ve used them for years in our annual boundary waters canoe area wilderness trips. they have never failed us. we now have 4 of them. it allows us to pack our daily meals for our canoeing and portaging and at night after dinner, we have space for our toiletries. it keeps them safe from the little critters (squirrels, chipmunks, field mice, bugs, etc.) as well as the bigger ones (bears, wolves, otters, etc.). we also don’t have to find a tree and hoist our two food packs high in the tree…a real time saver. this is just a great product if you do extended canoe trips.
My food, not bear food
yes, we can all agree.... bear canisters are a pain. i have to carry one all the time where i hike, so i am used to it, and it is totally worth it to not have to worry about my food. i really like this can because it is clear, so i can find my food easily, even when it is at the bottom of the can. also, if you are trying to decide between the two sizes offered by bearvault, i would choose the 500 every time. it is only a few ounces heavier for sooo much more space.
Works when necessary
we don’t want to carry them, but when needed, keep it simple. wish there was a size somewhere between the 450 and 500. but i’d rather have more space than not enough
