Bonfus’ most versatile pack

With the Framus, Bonfus sought to create a backpack that is lightweight enough for long and fast adventures and can provide a greater level of comfort compared to traditional frameless packs. Bonfus achieved this by applying their no-nonsense, minimalist, and practical design approach, using the most durable and lightweight fabrics and components that they could find, and taking advantage of the experience and craftsmanship of their skilled sewers.

The Framus 58L is the perfect pack for multi-day adventures where long food carries and heavier pack loads require a rigid frame for superior weight transfer.

Better for me than Gossamer Mariposa

I bought both the Bonfus Framus 58L and the Gossamer Mariposa 60 to compare in my hands and on my back before deciding. My previous pack was an older version of the Gossamer Mariposa. I loved it, except that it was a hand-me-down and a size too big. I thought for sure I'd stick with Gossamer, but wanted to give Bonfus a fair shot too. Upon arrival, the Gossamer looked like it would be more comfortable, due to its well-padded hip belt. I was skeptical about the Bonfus's funnel shape, with most of the pack volume towards the top. I had always liked that the Gossamer had more volume at the bottom of the pack because I'm a woman and had always heard that women have a lower center of gravity, etc. So I took all my usual gear and both packs to a local trailhead and hiked several miles with each fully packed for a pretend 4-night trek. I ended up being pleasantly surprised at how much more comfortable the Bonfus was due to its funnel shape and about a pound lighter weight. (The Gossamer pack was 13 oz. heavier, plus 3 oz. for a pack cover, which is not needed for the waterproof Bonfus.) The Gossamer looked and felt a lot like my old one (pretty comfortable but a little sturdier), but even with the load lifter straps on the newer version I still felt some pulling on my shoulders and a bit of pain in the middle of my upper back (a common issue for me, age 49). Then I loaded up the Bonfus and hiked with that, and wow, no pulling on my shoulders in any way that caused the usual back pain. And wow, I could feel that one-pound weight difference. I felt in my body what I read in another review -- how the Bonfus funnels the weight down to your lumbar and you really feel that weight solidly resting there on your lower back atop your hips. So, for a female with a lower center of gravity, this felt perfect. My shoulders felt light, and not a bit of back pain. Needless to say, I unexpectedly chose the Bonfus over the Gossamer even though the Gossamer was on sale and quite a bit less cheaper than the Bonfus. When you're pushing 50, comfort is priceless. I also ended up appreciating that the Bonfus did not come with hip belt pockets like the Gossamer does, so that you can customize your own hip belt pockets depending on your needs and get third-party ultra-light versions of them through Garage Grown Gear. But of course, that adds to the overall pack cost. PROS: lighter, unexpectedly comfortable, waterproof, can add custom hip belt pockets CON: higher cost in the end relative to other packs like Gossamer

    A solid bag

I purchased this item a few weeks ago, and having now taken it on a single night and a 4 night trip I feel comfortable giving it a review. I chose this bag as I wanted a lighter bag with more support than commonly found in a UL-type backpack, and the Framas really excelled at this. I'm not a 'true UL' hiker, so for my 4 night trip I had ~35lbs at the start of the trip and the bag carried beautifully. The weight was distributed well, the frame helped the bag keep its shape and avoid any pressure points, and it was large enough for all my stuff with enough space for another day or two of food or clothing for colder weather. It also rolled down well enough to not feel too large for the 1-night trip and while I left the frame in for the 1-nighter, it would be easy to remove to cut a little bit more weight when you've got a lighter load. I do wish the bag had a hydration port, I knew going in it didn't so I'm not marking it down for it and I was able to carry my bladder in a side pocket or the large back pocket and compensate around the weight imbalance. All in all a very nice pack that fits well, carries weight well, and feels very well made.

    Nice bag

Up front, I ended up returning it. It didn’t do all I wanted it to, for me. But it’s a beautifully made bag. The Ultra is great, and I’m sure would hold up great. I loaded it full and it carried well (just in my house.) I wanted the front pocket to hold more. Like my tent. It’s not that big, but would work if you want to strap your tent up top. I don’t. I also like more side pocket space and more attachment points on the back. For me my Mariposa still wins. But I know that’s not for everyone.

    Good balance

The fit is very good thanks to the frame and top loader. It's not the lightest overall, but the ultra fabric and thinner tape reduce weight. Peak Design capture can be attached to the shoulder strap. It is important to choose the size by trying out the fitting at the store.
