Hyperlite Mountain Gear's close quarters pack
The Southwest 40 keeps you honest about packing smart and efficiently on weekends or section hikes where the supplies you may need along the way are always within reach. When the route is thick with vegetation, requires the occasional up and over immovable objects, and calls for “suck in your gut and shimmy through” type moves, the Southwest is the backpack you want up close and personal. This pack family is made specifically for tough adventures that would rip most other ultralight-style packs to shreds.

Packing now
I haven’t used the pack yet other than walking around my neighborhood with 25lbs of weights getting ready for Camino de Santiago. I’ll let you know more when we get back

Durable, versital, and exceptionally light.
although i use the windrider model(i live on the east coast) my hiking partner(who lives on the west cost) uses the southwest. the packs are identical with the exception of the material used for the outside pockets. the southwest pockets offer more protection against brush and snags, and also shelter stored gear from sunlight. i think the latter is a more notable. both my partner and i have done off-trail expeditions through seas of brush, and neither of us experienced any issues of durability. with that said, the southwest pockets may offer more protection from snags puncturing something like a soft flask in the side pocket, or tearing away at a fly or rain jacket stored in the back pocket - this is something to consider. if you are in climates that have more direct sunlight(like that of southwest environments ;)), these pockets will help protect your gear from breaking down from constant light exposure. the torso sizing measurements are accurate and the pack is form fitting and extremely comfortable with light to moderately heavy loads(15lbs-30lbs). heavier loads are possible, just burdensome.
