    Convert from Sawyer

I bought this filter in Lone Pine after 5 days ontrail JMT NOBO from Cottonwood pass. Initially it was just supposed to be a backup but I ended up using it the most while hiking during the day. I didn’t have the gravity setup so defaulted to Sawyer in camp. Going forward the BeFree will be my primary go to filter. Highly recommend.

BeFree mediocre performance but very lightweight

Pros: the BeFree is very lightweight and easy to use. Does not leave water in the flask like one of its similar competitors, and, when unobstructed, works very well. I honestly do like using it when it works and not straining to get water out. Cons: you will go through multiple filters long before they should cease working. There is no long term performance, in my experience. Even waters that may have the slightest silt content will clog the filter making it very difficult to squeezewater from it and potentially damagingthe flask (have had to replace the flask once too). On a recent trip to Isle Royale, I purchased a brand new filter for my BeFree and bought a brand new BeFree for my son. My son's worked very well the whole trip. Mine became clogged on day 2 when filtering from a crystal clear inland lake on the island. We filtered from the same water sources. By the end of the 8 day trip my brand new filter was mostly useless. Glad we planned redundancy. Very frustrated with inconsistent performance. Overall, I give the BeFree a 3 out of 5. I've tried other water filtration systems and some have performed better but are much heavier and some have performed worse and still heavier. I'll very likely stick with the BeFree due to the product weight and very easy to use, but always looking for other systems.

Works great every time! Just make sure you let it soak for a few hours if it’s been a while between uses. That’ll help the flow rate.
