Hearty soup
i've never had borscht before so i won't try to compare it to the real thing. i did enjoy it and found it to be a satisfying bowl of hearty vegetable soup! i added some red chili flake to kick up the spice but thought the original product was good on it's own. i see other reviews saying they had issues with reconstituting... i only had a single (thick) piece of cabbage that was still a bit chewy. otherwise, cooked up well for me. i'll buy this again!
So so
first i'd like to say that garage grown gear has a very quick shipping and i've had no problems with them. secondly for this pouch, the taste is fine but it does not reconstitute well. even after keeping it closed for over 15 minutes it was still too chewy. i put it in a saucepan with a little bit of extra water and cooked it for an additional 5 minutes and it was still chewy. it does not taste like a real borscht either, i'll stick to russia. the taste is okay and light but you'll want to eat something else along with this to get your calories.
Decent Flavor, Didn't Rehydrate
flavor was good on this one. not my favorite, but better than most commercial meals. like other nomad nutrition meals, i couldn't get it to rehydrate fully. this was my first of theirs and waited a 20 min to rehydrated and eventually got too hungry and ate it crunchy. was consumable though
Flavourful!
Small portion but very satisfying. Of most of the backpacking meals I've had these are the most flavourful and satisfying. Package size is desirable over the others and the less water required is also a plus. If I can get the calories and the carbs I'm happy. I can always add meat or other items to the meal if needed.
Best backpacking meals/ snacks for the cost
i love the nomad nutrition food packets! i try and eat healthy on trail, and on thruhikes especially it can be tough. more so if you don't send boxes, however, i know there's a cost involved with mailing, more planning etc. anyway for the cost, nutrition, flavor, etc these are the best i've tasted. they are a little small but what i do is add a packet of the trailtopia diced chicken, or sausage. then i add one individual olive oil packet.(cantniniaoils); combined you get anywhere from 6 to 900 calories. very tasty! for food, i've found this to also be one of the lightest ways to get good healthy food in your pack without also weighing it down.. one nomad nutrition packet plus one trailtopia packet only weigh roughly 3.2 oz combined. the packaging is small and flat for both , making it much easier to load up your food bag/canister.. at least in comparison to a mountain house meal, or any of the similar bigger meals you see out there. the nomad nutrition, in my opinion, have the best flavor; and best overall taste in comparison to other meals i've tried. not only that, but they are packed with nutrients and veggies. i started using these in 2019 and haven't looked back. highly recommend! i've tried them all except the curry one.. and that's only because i don't like the smell/ taste of curry. if you want the most calorie dense options, go for the hungarian goulash or irish shepherd pie.
