The SplitWing is SlingFin's most minimal shelter for people whose top priority is achieving the lowest weight possible without compromising weather coverage. Designed with thru-hikes and FKTs in mind, the SplitWing and its modular accessories are adaptable to the wide range of conditions that are likely to be encountered on a 4-month-plus adventure.

When used on its own, the SplitWing is palatial for one and cozy for two. A pair of hardcore UL hikers (or very close friends) will appreciate sharing a shelter that packs down to the size of a grapefruit and weighs less than two packs of ramen per person. At 7.9oz without the 6 included DAC j-stakes (10.3oz all-in), the SplitWing Tarp is damn light. Strategically-placed reinforcements made of SlingFin's Expedition Series fly fabric keep the SplitWing in one piece when conditions get gnarly.

Unlike most shaped tarps, the SplitWing can be pitched with the front trekking pole anywhere between 105cm-120cm thanks to its front "wings", allowing you to prioritize floor area and storm protection with a low pitch, or provide generous headroom when pitched high. It's closed at the foot end to reduce drafts and increase weather protection.

The optional vestibule (included in the SplitWing Shelter Bundle), covers the front opening of the tarp, providing 360-degree coverage, perfect for those who are looking for the light weight of a minimal tarp shelter but would rather not give up the comfort and security of a tent. Add the SplitWing Mesh Body (also included in the SplitWing Shelter Bundleand you'll have all the protection, versatility, and coziness of a double-wall tent but at a scant 21oz trail weight.

  • Front pole can be pitched from 105cm-120cm

Perfect Fit for my Mesh House

I really like the quality, weight of course, and fit for my single person tent. Comes with great tent stakes as well. When I'm going to go ultra light, this is the tarp I'll have with me.

        Solid tarp so far

Got this for fair-weather backpacking and was quite happy with it on its first overnight. It's easy enough to pitch and held up fine to a little wind without use of the extra guy lines. I haven't yet tried it in any inclement weather so I won't speak for wet weather protection. I did find that there wasn't a ton of extra headroom while lying down--I noticed my head was within a few inches of the front pole while trying to keep the bottom of my bag away from the foot-end of the tent. I'm only 5'10" but I've seen taller folks using this tarp so maybe I had more room than I thought. Generally it's also a bit of a routine to get in and out, especially if you're using a bug net, and there's really not much extra space if it's pitched high enough to sit upright, but these things all come with the territory of tarp camping so I won't fault it for that.

        I Love This Thing

i purchased the splitwing bundle; my review reflects the overall package as i haven't used the tarp alone. i'm a hammock camper, but i sometimes go places where i know a hammock won't work. i poked around a lot at a variety of lightweight tents. i knew i didn't want to invest in a dyneema tent, but that still left a lot of tents out there to compare. i went with the splitwing and i'm really glad i did. the first time i set it up i did a pretty ****** job, and it was already raining. in a solid night of whidbey island rain, the interior stayed dry but for a few spots of water that were about quarter-sized and were likely due to my inattention while setting it up. i've not used it in a steady rain, but i'm confident it'll keep my dry if i take the time to set it up properly. you'll definitely want to practice setting up the tarp prior to using it in the backcountry, and i recommend carrying at least two more stakes to ensure you have a taut set-up. i recommend this without reservation. it's great gear, and slingfin's customer service is amazing, too.
